Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara Review

I used to be a mascara addict. I mean literally at one point I had over twenty mascaras in my makeup collection. I love the look of big, long, curled lashes. But after having corrective eye surgery in June of last year, I haven't been able to use it as much because it tends to massively dry out my already dry eyes. So finding a mascara that doesn't dry out my eyes more than they already are is a challenge. Plus I am still consistently using eye drops so to make my challenge more challenging the mascara needs to be water resistant not water proof, meaning that it needs to stay in place while I apply eye drops but wash off easily without rubbing. Needless to say my mascara collection is down to less than half it's size.

Benefit introduced its new Roller Lash Mascara a few weeks ago. I am a huge fan of Benefit Cosmetics Mascaras; their "They're Real" Mascara being my ultimate favorite. But due to my previously explained mascara challenge I am skeptical to purchasing mascara since I have lost many newly purchased mascaras as they didn't meet up to the challenge. Luckily Sephora included this mascara as a sample in on of their free promos (which I always take advantage of) and got to try it.

This is what Benefit Cosmetics says this mascara is capable of doing: "Benefit Roller Lash Mascara lets you create ultra-long, full lashes to achieve your best wide-eyed and gorgeous lash look. With a brush that’s designed to grab and lift lashes for a super-curling effect, it’s perfect for all types—including short and straight lashes. The eye-opening Hook ‘n’ Roll™ brush grabs, separates, lifts and curls…while the instant curve-setting formula holds for 12 hours."

As you can see in the before photo below I have very, very disappointingly non-existent lashes. They are straight and have zero curl at all, and they are also very light colored. And thanks to my hooded eyelids unless they are curled upward you can't see them. So adding to my mascara challenge, I also have to try to find one that holds curl all day. Sigh, yup I was about to give up.

I decided to put this mascara to the ultimate test and see how well it performed on: length, volume, curl, water resistance, and longevity. Here's how it did:

I am in love with the brush of this mascara. It makes for perfect mess-free and clump-free application. And it is also perfect for those small bottom lashes in hard to reach areas. Overall, I am very impressed with this mascara and will definitely repurchase the full size. It didn't make my eyes dry at all and I applied eyedrops several times throughout the day and it didn't run at all and stayed in place the full twelve hours without one bit of fallout. The curl help up really, really well too! Looking at the photo after twelve hours the color isn't as intense but it definitely held it's curl. Just to clarify I did curl my lashes before applying the mascara as I always do and feel that I wouldn't have been able to give an honest review otherwise as I always curl my lashes before mascara application I wouldn't have had much to compare it too if I didn't. But since curling or no curling they would always fall flat in a few hours anyway I can definitely say this mascara held up to its marketing.

Overall score on the Mascara Challenge Test: 9.5

Length: 10 (lashes appeared double in length)

Volume: 7 (I would've preferred a little bit more volume for my taste)

Curl: 10 (lashes were curled to the heavens!)

Water Resistance: 10 (applied eyedrops more than five times throughout the day and they were in tact)

Longevity: 10 (both the curl and the mascara itself held up to its promise of staying in place for 12 hours)
